Havel’s signature character, Ferdinand Vaněk, visits the home of old friends who try to seduce him into making the same moral compromises they have made in exchange for small privileges. Havel’s wit and political undercurrents make Unveiling both hilariously uncomfortable and strikingly relevant—a farce that exposes the desperation of those who have lost their moral bearings.  

Havel was both the former Czech President and the leader of the Velvet Revolution against Soviet rule in 1989.  He is also one of the premiere absurdist playwrights of the 20th Century, as well as winner of multiple Obie Awards here in New York.  This play was written in 1975 while his work was still banned in Czechoslovakia, and it was originally performed privately in living rooms.  The showing at Torn Page is in a similar theatrical condition to the original showings.

Join Eleni Sikelianos and Mónica de la Torre for an afterparty at Torn Page, celebrating the launch of Memory Rehearsal.

Memory Rehearsal is a genre-busting encounter between a poet and her ancestral past documenting a startling intersection of queer history, ancient theater, Utopian visions, and modern poetry.

In 1901, Eva Palmer abandoned her life as a privileged New York socialite, moving to Paris with her lover, writer and salonist Natalie Barney. The two Americans became the center of a wild tangle of lesbian love affairs and backyard performances based in an intentional reimagining of Sappho’s work and life. This hotbed of early European modernism saw in the ancient past the possibility for sexual and artistic emancipation, especially for lesbian women.

This is the third book in a trilogy of hybrid memoirs in which Sikelianos reckons with a family shaped by mental illness, homelessness, and addiction. Grappling with knots of personal and broader histories, she performs a powerful act of recovery, re-situating herself by claiming her lineage.

We begin with zone as a spatial concept through which the question of boundary and form is undecided and fluid. Activating the concept in poetry, performance, and a poet-artist’s reflection on the concept and experience of zone:

Barrett Watten will conduct a dérive across the territory of Zone, sampling its twelve regions on the border between Chance and Form.

As present absence, Steve Benson saunters across mutually unintelligible patches of implacable culture.

Thanks to an initiative in cultural exchange, Marjorie Welish remembers an experience during her art residency in Łódź, Poland.

Join us for a generative author study, where we will unpack the singular genius of Faulkner’s approach, attitude, and method, submerging ourselves in the technical virtuosity of America’s greatest novelist.

In this eight-week workshop, students will revitalize their sense of the possibilities of fiction through deep reading Faulkner’s four greatest achievements—As I Lay Dying, The Sound and The Fury, Absalom! Absalom!, and The Hamlet—analyzing their techniques and generating new ideas about compositional methods via group discussion. Supplemented by interviews, speeches, and lectures given by the author, students will extract for themselves a timeless, personal, and forever useful methodology.

Over the course of the eight weeks, students will generate four pieces of short fiction and have the opportunity to present their work to the class for feedback…
