Conceived and directed by Carrie Ahern, "How to outstrip this female body?" is a duet between dancer/choreographer Carrie Ahern and composer/musician Jen Shyu which looks at the intersection of sex and religion in their lives as women. Ahern was raised in a strict Catholic household and Shyu in a more open Buddhist and Confucian home. They use both their upbringings and research into other religious traditions to interweave personal story, song and dance into a uniquely modern ritual. Together, they both dance and play two of Shyu's traditional instruments: the gayageum (a Korean flat harp) and the moon lute (a two-stringed lute from Taiwan). Lighting design by Jay Ryan.
